Imperfection Allows Us to Depend on God
Imperfection Allows Us to Rely on God: Finding Strength in Our Weakness
As I wrap up this month’s series on overcoming the pressure to be “enough,” I want to pause and reflect on some key truths we’ve explored together.
✅ You are enough—not because of what the world says, but because of who your Creator is.
✅ Your worth is God-given, not performance-based.
✅ God’s love is unwavering and unconditional—He loves you right now, just as you are.
✅ You are His masterpiece, created with intention and purpose.
✅ And yes—there is beauty in imperfection.
When Perfectionism Holds You Back
Recently, I took a personality test, and guess what? My therapist was right—I'm a perfectionist.
Honestly, that surprised me—not because I don’t strive for excellence, but because I never realized how perfectionism was quietly holding me back.
Here’s the paradox: sometimes, my need to do things perfectly keeps me from doing them at all. Have you ever felt that way?
The test described it like this:
“Your perfectionist tendencies drive you to constantly improve yourself and the world around you. This relentless pursuit of growth and meaning can be both exhilarating and exhausting. You have a knack for seeing potential and possibilities where others might not, but you may struggle to bring your visionary ideas into reality due to self-doubt or fear of criticism.”
Yep. That hit home.
Self-doubt. Fear of criticism. That subtle whisper: “If you can’t do it perfectly, why bother?”
I know God says I’m enough. I know only He is perfect. Yet I still wrestle with the thought that my imperfections disqualify me.
God’s Power Is Made Perfect in Weakness
We live in a world that celebrates self-sufficiency. But the Bible offers a better message: your weakness is not a flaw—it’s a space for God's grace.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
— 2 Corinthians 12:9
Our culture says: Be strong. Be enough. Be self-made.
God says: Be still. Be honest. Let Me carry you.
In her book You Are the Girl for the Job, Jess Connolly beautifully writes:
“All of you is loved, all of you is held, everything is redeemable, and the rest of your life is dependent on His capacity—not your ability to cover up who you are or how you’ve been made.” (p. 133)
Let that sink in: Your life depends on His capacity, not your ability.
Moses: A Leader with Doubts, Called by God
One of the Bible’s most powerful stories of self-doubt is found in Moses. When God called him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses didn’t leap with confidence. He hesitated.
“Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh?” — Exodus 3:11
“What if they don’t believe me?” — Exodus 4:1
“I have never been eloquent... I am slow of speech and tongue.” — Exodus 4:10
And how does God respond?
“Certainly I will be with you.” — Exodus 3:12
“Now then go, and I—even I—will be with your mouth and teach you what you are to say.” — Exodus 4:11
God didn’t choose Moses because he was flawless. He chose Moses because He would work through him. God doesn’t need perfection; He needs our obedience and trust.
How often are we like Moses, saying, “Are you sure, Lord? Surely I am not the one you want for this”? Like Moses, we wrestle with feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt and fear.
Whether it’s your job, your family, your calling, or your personal struggles—God isn’t asking you to be enough. He’s asking you to trust Him.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
— Proverbs 3:5-6
4 Ways to Rely on God Instead of Yourself
Feeling the pressure to do it all? Here are some simple but powerful ways to shift from self-reliance to God-dependence:
Pray before you act. Start by asking for His wisdom and strength.
Be honest with God. Tell Him where you feel weak and ask for help trusting Him more.
Stay connected to a faith-filled community. We all need reminders that God is in control.
Surrender perfectionism. Trust that God's grace is bigger than your shortcomings.
From Striving to Surrender
God sees you through the lens of grace, love, and purpose—not your flaws.
Where in your life do you need to stop striving for perfection and start resting in God's strength?
⭐Speak truth over yourself (affirmations based on Scripture).
⭐Silence the negative self-talk—would you speak to a friend the way you speak to yourself?
⭐Surround yourself with people who reflect God’s love and speak life into your heart.
Let’s stop striving and start surrendering. His grace really is enough—even in our imperfection.
